Teagan is now forced to relocate and enroll in a new exclusive all-boys prep school that houses the prestigious men’s crew team. Teagan’s family scandal would not stop her from joining a men’s-only sport, and she now has to face the competition and eventual feelings that will follow all the male athletes.

With a strong premise centered on coming-of-age films, this series looks to set Teagan Tao apart against rowing competition and social school politics. With director Vivian Lin, the series looks to showcase the effects of taking the position of an outsider of the prep school crew archetype. It will be a series devoted to people interested in teenage self discovery in addition to relationships and of course the challenges that come with growing up.

Finding Its Stroke: Where 'Crew Girl' Excels

A huge strength of the show is the premise of a female athlete joining a male-dominated sport. This immediately generates a variety of both internal and external conflicts. Teagan must not only learn to meet the physical demands of crew, but must also gain respect, challenge prejudices, and gain the right to even be on the team in a sport that is arguably not meant for her. Additionally, constructing a team-focused narrative with authenticity can be an empowering story and provide what tends to be lacking in storytelling for younger audience members - strong and main female characters.

The 'rivalry and attraction' elements that the synopsis speaks of are another tempting factor. When you look at the nature of a prep school crew team, the competitive nature and struggles of team mates will only heighten the emotional emphasis. The troubled friendships, frenemies, and rivalries will add to the drama portable plot of the show as sport will not be the singular anchor of drama. While Teagan’s family scandal might satisfy the requirements for a plot device, with the absence of more detail it simply is an opportunity for better character growth and more themes to be explored.

Harrigan's vision for a small town with an elite prep school is an effective starting point. However, now that we're in the era of Peak TV, there are a lot of shows with these tropes. There will need to be some innovation to avoid it falling into cliché. Is there something different or special about this small town? Is this elite school something different or special? With student rowers and drama there will have to be a careful balance to avoid the other half of the show feeling developed enough to retain the audience. Most importantly, the first encounters with the boys rowing team crew will need to set expectations around their disruption to the status quo rowing team and how they will continue to welcome Teagan without constantly giving her the win.

A Promising Start to a New Race

"Crew Girl" expertly combines sports drama, personal struggle, and romance in a way that should appeal all fans of character-driven teen narratives. The series heavily draws on Teagan existing as an aspirational character in a male-dominated field. This gives the series an already established structure and plot points that will grow the characters and the narrative. The series must get the other aspects of the story right and introduce more unique elements to the already established settings. Teagan’s journey and the promise of solid acting finds "Crew Girl" in a great spot to attract audiences. The series is a welcomed departure, courageously placing the protagonist in a difficult situation and challenging the audiences to sympathize with Teagan as she adjusts to a new life, a new sport, work, and relationships. "Crew Girl" will be a welcomed series for audiences in the market for a new twist in an old school genre with a lot more focus on female relationships and empowerment.
