A Bond Forged in the Wild

“Heart of the Beast” opens with a monumental challenge to its protagonist. A crash while en route to home leaves Special Forces soldier James Belmont (Brad Pitt) and his military working dog Odin stranded in the Alaskan wilderness. The challenge for Belmont is to return home while countless others have perished trying. The strength of “Heart of the Beast” is showing how Belmont is able to sustain himself and Odin long enough to find a way back to civilization. Pitt shows Belmont as a tough, but emotionally fragile man. The emotional trials of Belmont are evident on Pitt’s face as he shows the audience how brutal enduring in the elements of Alaska can be. Pitt shows how the character must rely on himself for long periods of time to endure the trials of the Alaskan wilds. Audience members who have seen the film have commented on Pitt’s ability to elicit concern for his character from the audience.

Also deserving of mention is Pitt’s canine co-star Odin. Belmont and Odin’s relationship is the foundation of the film and shows that a dog can be as threatening as two legged predators. The relationship is further developed as they rely on each other to keep their will to survive. Viewers have commented on the dog’s ability to show concern for Belmont and his well being. Pitt’s ability to show how a canine can sustain itself in the wilds of Alaska is the foundation of many emotional scenes that further Belmont’s character development.

Survival Against All Odds: A Test of Spirit

Known for showing the seedier side of humanity, director David Ayer shows a different side of himself with Heart of the Beast. Here he presents the animal side of humanity, as a relentless and dangerous Alaskan wilderness closes in around the two main characters. Belmont and Odin must face the dangers of Alaskan wilderness to survive. Ayer tackles movie survival and shows audiences what it means to survive in a relentless wilderness. What makes Heart of the Beast uniquely beautiful is its use of New Zealand’s diverse and picturesque wilderness to portray the Alaska of the film.

The film is dubbed “gripping” by its audiences, as its fast pace and beautiful, wild, and desolate scenery enhance the isolation that surrounds the characters. But heart pounding action and tension aren’t the only means to an end for Ayer. He shows and tackles the psychology of the characters in this film to an extreme effect. The end result: a wild and dangerous PG-13 film that shows the audiences what it means to be lost and isolated in a wilderness of this nature. Although there are a thousand and one ways to die, a single victory means everything. Ultimately, Heart of the Beast shows that it is not the final destination that is important, but that the real meaning comes from the journey and the will to go on living and fighting.

Finding the Heart of the Story

“Heart of the Beast” combines suspenseful, white-knuckle scenes of wilderness survival with poignant, sometimes heartbreaking, situations to create a powerful film about the most basic of instincts and the loyalty of humans and canines. The audience response to the film has been exceptional with an average score of 7.8. Many have called it “beautiful” and “emotional.” The film’s sole premise of surviving in the wilderness is not new to the thriller genre, but the passion and performances of the actors provide a nicely developed and meaningful film. Some may consider “Beast” predictable. While its survival situations and scenes may be commonly found in other films of the genre, and therefore somewhat unsurprising to its audience, it remains an exciting and strong film, and compellingly directed. The high level of realism of the situations must have made the film difficult to apply for a Restricted rating. “Heart of the Beast” is a powerfully engaging film and one of the best of its genre. Filled with performances that actors should be proud of, this is one film that will stick with you after it is over. The Coco Flix library is even more amazing for having this film.
