A Glimmer of Grandeur in a Gritty World

“Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups” is set during the decline of the Portuguese colonial era. The movie wants to showcase an epic criminal saga. Unfortunately, it sinks into self-indulgence. These issues are compounded because the movie wants to showcase a lot of things. Because it is so action-oriented, the plot really takes a back seat.

Audiences have praised the art direction along with the massive scale and wonderful performances. That said, it struggles to be a great movie. There are a lot of great performances to enjoy and a lot of big moments. The plot meanders and because there are a lot of action set pieces, it clocks in at a massive run time, 2 hours 45 minutes. It is projects that are constructed with a lot of passion. It is a movie that people will want to watch if they are action movie aficionados, but the plot is suffering so much that it is a frustrating movie.
