The Thundermans Are Back, And They're Crashing

If you've ever wished for one more super-powered family adventure, Clash of the Thundermans delivers. This movie will give you a familiar, comforting feeling, while still surprising you with its high-stakes adventure. Clash of the Thundermans isn't just another drawn-out episode. It goes deep into the Thundermans' family bond, which is amazing, because the Thundermans, while often chaotic, have an unbreakable bond. The plot is fast and to the point. Little Chloe has grown up with amazing powers, but now has an even more destructive ability. The Hero League, who likes to keep a tight leash on things, thinks that Chloe should go to an elite superhero boarding school. It is always hard to send children to boarding school, but for a superhero family, that means that Chloe will be several "away" years away from her "loved ones." When a family is split apart to one side of superheroes and the other of supervillains, it is an even more split conflict of awesome epicness.

Phoebe, Barb, and Billy make the decision to hide Chloe to protect her. They choose to go off on their own. Max, Hank, and Nora are put on the case, to force the rulekeepers to bring Chloe in for training. This provides more interest because it moves past putting the team against a new villain, and shows them in a state of internal conflict, while also providing them the opportunity to show what family means to them and what is really theirs to protective of. The movie doesn't avoid showing the two sides the emotional effects of this hard split, and keeps the comic tone of the movie. Because of this move the humor is provided to the audience as relief of the amount of tension built between the family. The Director of the movie, Trevor Kirschner, knows the reality of this situation with protections of families, and showing on-screen loyalties in internal conflicts is his speciality. He has made sure that the protectiveness of the family is shown in each and every situation that puts them against one another.

When Siblings Clash: The Heart of the Matter

The strength of Clash of the Thundermans is its portrayal of families in the pressure cooker. It is not about good guy bad guy. It is about what families consider good. Billy, Barb, and Phoebe are protecting the family, and keeping the family together. They believe that Chloe is in need of their support, and not a foe. Max, Nora, and Hank on the other hand, feel an obligation, understand the implications of having an unchecked super power, and perhaps believe the Hero league has right on its side. This creates an internal struggle for each of the characters, helping them define their obligations to their family and understanding of loyalty.

This films has great balance of action, comedic, and emotional beats. The ‘full-on battle for the Thundermans’ future’ promised in the synopsis means much more than a physical fight. It’s a fight of ideas and feelings. The original cast of Kira Kosarin as Phoebe, Jack Griffo as Max, and Maya Le Clark as Chloe shine once again in returning to their roles. Their easy on-screen return and chemistry help the audience settle into the world the Thundermans have returned to. The original cast’s chemistry pulls at the audience’s heartstrings. Thunderman fans may have a hard time other cast member’s separation, but if there’s one cast member who’s able to shine the most, it’s Maya Le Clark, without a doubt. This movie was able to harness Chloe’s hilarious use of her new powers, along with the inherent scariness, and really captures the essence of the Thundermans. During high emotional and somewhat serious scenes, there’s always going to be some sort of sibling fight or a hilarious quip to remind the audience of the quirky heroes.

A Super-Sized Story with Room for Growth

Clash of the Thundermans certainly entertains with an engaging mix of super-powered family fun, but you can still see it's a made-for-TV movie at times. Aside from some pacing issues, this is a pretty enjoyable and quick movie. Honestly, most of the problems that I had were more to do with the Confederation of Superheroes Act/the Hero League. Mostly because the entire movie relies on it. In most movies, there would be crippling emotional aftershocks of the family splitting up, but somehow, they avoided that. The movie sets up the problem very well, and all the characters genuinely want to make up, which fits the movie, but it felt a bit rushed. The visual effects were okay, nothing special, of course, and were not going to win any awards. Overall, an enjoyable movie, and I wouldn't mind watching it again.

Clash of the Thundermans is a great choice for families and a satisfying addition for teen fans who want a big heart with their action comedy. This film is the perfect example of dealing with the change and understanding perspective. It reminds superheroes that before putting on the cape, one has to figure out how to be a family. Ultimately this is a wholesome film that will appeal to families of potentially mixed ages. This is a film that captures the Thundermans' actions and delivers an entertaining performance. It will hold up even after you know what is coming. CocoFlix is an optimal place for family comedy films. Clash of the Thundermans is a great addition to their already mature collection.
