A Deadly Dance of Deceit

“Just Play Dead” begins with a premise any thriller fan would love to sink their teeth into. A criminal mastermind executes a brilliant plan of faking his own death, stealing insurance money and framing the wife’s lover all at once. So far, so good, right? But, the wife has her own scheme and is actually the first to outsmart him with a brilliant plot to take everything for herself. Now they battle for supremacy with each other and the ticking clock as their only obstacles.

Ever since credits began to roll, we know that this movie is going to be full of plots and schemes, cunning and betrayals, and lots of games with each other’s psyches. Betraying other people is one thing, but the thing that would take this game to the next level is how creative people are willing to sell their own souls. Based on the genres that the movie is sticking to, we should expect a great deal of suspense and plot devices that will have people gasping from their seats. With an R rating, it’s going to be an intense, but also gruesome and horrid, look into the minds of vindictive people who have greed as their main driving force. Without a doubt, the most interesting part of the movie is going to be the characters’ brilliant, intricate schemes and complex strategies against each other, given the history they share. Creativity and writing of exceptional quality are key to this movie, so each plot twist is grounded in logically, and strategically, addressing the expectations people will have.

The Architects of Intrigue

"Just Play Dead" is shaping up to be an exciting and promising project with the talent that has been assembled. The director, Martin Campbell, is known for bold and exciting action and thrillers. Martin Campbell has directed projects like "Casino Royale" and "GoldenEye,” exceptional works that show his incredible ability with suspense, action, and tense scenarios, and the ability to masterfully move phenomenal stories at an excellent pace from start to finish. Campbell’s involvement is a clear sign that "Just Play Dead" will not suffer the same issues that many convoluted plots suffer from: exposition dump after exposition dump. What will keep the audience engaged is, of course, the jaw-dropping plot, but with Campbell’s involvement, we can also expect that each scene will escalate intelligently keeping the audience in anticipation of what’s to come next.

The cast is equally as appealing. These three characters are going to have a great time fleshing out these tired personas in interesting ways. Samuel L. Jackson will have fun playing the good ol’ criminal mastermind. He can switch on a combination of gravitas, menace, presence, and dread to make people enjoy watching someone vile. I could see him relishing the opportunity to say sharp, calculated lines to an audience that would see him with perfectly devious eyes. I could see Jackson as someone who has to have other people assume intentions so he can backstab and remain unnoticed. Eva Green will have a great time playing a character that someone could see backstabbing even more. She really lets her icy charm express her intensity in very calm ways. This character could express a ruthless intensity and Green will be able to show off her expressiveassets. The relation between these two will bring out the best with each other. Finally, María Pedraza could bring a lot as the third side. She could be a lover and add depth to the triangle and shape and bring contrast to the character. Their combined charisma will bring out a lot of fun performances and make for a good book-to-movie.

Navigating the Twists and Turns

Strong premise and talent aside, “Just Play Dead” has its fair share of obstacles. A plot based on an eternity of outmaneuvering can quickly spiral into an unnecessarily confusing plot. The audience will lose interest or start to pick the plot apart if there are too many loopholes and improbable coincidences. If the plot focuses too much on the twists and turns, the characters will end up losing their humanity and become hollow pieces of the game. The plot of the movie has to feel purposeful and meaningful and should always keep the focus on the characters' motivations to keep the audience interested.
