Stepping into the Past: A Fresh Premise

“Time Photo Studio” is one of a kind. Their photograph developers, Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang, can jump into photos. More impressively, they can change moments and fulfill their clients' requests. Their clients get to have what seems like the ability to time travel and mess with history. “Time Photo Studio” isn’t your typical detective show; it has an edge over the other films inspired by time travel with the premise of changing minor details of history and the effect it has on the time line. Imagine looking into the past and taking part in a historical event. Imagine then, changing the outcome of that event. LINK CLICK does all that and more.

What makes the show is the relationship between the two protagonists. Cheng Xiaoshi is able to “time travel” because he merges with the bodies of the photographers, and experiences the past through their eyes. Meanwhile, Lu Guang is in the present able to look everything that is happening in the past through the lenses of the future, allowing him to know what is about to happen, and helping to prevent time from collapsing. They have an interesting dynamic because of their different abilities, one of which is experience, and the other which is futuristic. Every adventure has the risk of danger, and this is the case with this show as well. As the synopsis is so simple, it is almost as intriguing, showing that the results of your actions have drastic consequences.

The episodic nature of the premise allows the series to address a wealth of human situations and issues. It may be about unearthing long buried truths. Perhaps it's more about addressing a wrong, however subtle it may have been. The cases may vary, but they all involve humanity in a deep, emotional sense. It is not enough to solve the puzzle. The important part is to understand the people in the frame. That is how the fantasy components support a relatable story.

A Canvas of Emotion and Sound

The innovative concept of LINK CLICK is further enhanced by its stellar production. Easy to see why Rafael Motamayor of /Film praises the animation and music of the series. It is evident the production team chose the right vendors and truly mastered the execution of their ideas. The production team's vivid command of the visual medium truly amazes. The production breathes life into a modern-day metropolis with precisely machined and animated detail. The animated production never backgrounds the narrative, and is in fact dynamically telling the narrative. Characters are seen to be animated to relive a scene, and each individual animation/vignette houses various layers and added depth of emotions to the overall scene. The attention of the production pulls away the viewer and immerses them in the maze of the mystery between elements of the production that seamlessly transition from the present, to the past, and to the present again.

Per every production element, the music is masterfully integrated as the emotional backbone of each scene. The music provides the bedding and framework for the more intimate, profoundly emotional connections within the narrative. It provides an emotional framework for the vignettes that are described as "Life-Affirming" beyond the visual. Each of these self contained stories introduces new characters and new situations so that every episode feels new.

But what lifts LINK CLICK above a standard anthology is the consistent underlying tension in each and every mission. There is a simple rule, if Xiaoshi observes the past, he mustn't alter it. Despite this rule, both observation and influence, while perhaps more subtle, still carry risks. The series begins to poke and worry at the ethical and moral uncertainties of their unusual power. How much interference can be justified to improve another individual's life, how much can be justified to change their life for the better, how much can be justified to ensure that they are not worse off, and without fundamentally altering their fortune? This is the drama and suspense that LINK CLICK masterfully creates. Even the most insignificant of requests means a much bigger deal.

Critics have noticed how the series builds audience investment and creates tension. It is truly a credit to the writing that the stakes feel so palpable. The audience is reminded often that the situation can go left at any second. When the situation does go left, so does the audience emotionally. The construction of complexity of the story is beyond the detail plot. It deals with the complexity of human emotions and the permanent nature of time. The combination of the individual narratives with the growing sense of a more dangerous game adds to the appeal. Along with the fact that the series is constructing an original series, LINK CLICK is an absorbing watch that keeps you thinking even after you've finished it.
