Statham's Unwavering Resolve on Deck

A classic Jason Statham revenge thriller ('In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale' and 'The Expendables' director Jean-François Richet's) newest film, 'Mutiny', has terrific potential. The premise has fans of the genre intrigued. Jason Statham's character, Cole Reed, having witnessed the death of his boss and then being subsequently set up with the frame of his murder, has you in the familiar and comfortable zone, but the set up is classic Jason Statham and has you prepared for a wild film. The unusual setting of the story also is a draw. Cargo ships make for a great backdrop as a resting place and a place to administer justice as well. With most of… … most of Richet’s other films, 'Mutiny' is looking to be more concerned with quality action scenes and story cinematography and editing, with a minimum of complicated storyline.

As Cole Reed, Statham certainly does not disappoint. Statham’s performance as the stoic, highly capable man fits perfectly. He’s able to show more lethal intent through channels other than speech. There is a sort of raw, physical honesty to Statham’s performance, and enables the comedic value of even the most farcical action sequences. He plays a tough guy, and he is the toughest guy, and this presence is definitely needed in Mutiny. Cole Reed’s character arch from bemused bystander to revenge seeking avenger is well earned and driven by the most primal of desires for justice. This film also capitalizes on Statham’s most uniquely identifiable feature; making Cole Reed a compelling protagonist who more or less lets his actions do all the talking. This film is a perfect example for all those that appreciate their action heroes to let their fists do the talking.

High Seas Mayhem and Moral Gray Areas

What makes 'Mutiny' unique is the setting of a cargo ship. The ship is more than just the background. It is a setting and a character of the cargo ship’s claustrophobic R-rated action. Richet, with an eye for cramped and claustrophobic settings, maximizes the ship’s corridors, engine rooms, and cargo holds. The limited space means that every sequence is a fight for a person’s life, and finding an escape route is almost impossible. This setting aids Cole in adapting in clever, original, and entertaining ways, even in a worn out and well used action genre.

'Mutiny' combines its action and suspense with satisfying doses of thriller elements. Cole’s quest for vengeance grows and develops to be too big of a task for one person, and creates an international conspiracy that escalates the threat of the journey. Creating a personal quest that has worldwide consequences means the threat is always escalating and the audience can never leave their seat. The supporting cast of Annabelle Wallis and Roland Møller is integral on Cole’s mission, even blurring the lines of good and evil. While some of the characters are cliche, the interaction with Cole is always good and charged, and adds to the ‘Mutiny’’s sense of urgency and danger. The moral gray areas create a contrasting dimension to a black and white outcome, and adds an extra dimension to justice oriented action.

The Plot's Ripples and Rough Edges

Yes, I think 'Mutiny' delivers on its brand of raw, gritty action, but it does have its tiny issues. Having a framed protagonist unravel a conspiracy is a tired trope that has been used a million times. Although the plot might feel slightly predictable to people familiar with the action-thriller genre, Richet manages to infuse the story with energy by setting it in the cargo ship. Some plot points may feel tired and predictable, but the setting in the cargo ship feels original. 'Mutiny' is Statham's bread and butter, and his character’s strong persona means despite the original and thoughtful character development by the writers, its hard for the audience to predict Statham's character’s next outlandish act. The trimmed runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes creates an enjoyable high paced movie, but the tight pacing sacrifices some of the supporting characters. Though the script has some issues dealing with tired international conspiracy clichés, these issues are resolved by keeping the antagonist for Cole and the shipboard action thrilling. Every element of 'Mutiny' shows that it aims to be a raw, high energy action piece. Richet proves he can direct action movies, and Statham shows that even with a tired framework, he is a worthy star.

'Mutiny' delivers a thoroughly enjoyable action thriller that is well aware of its niche audience. The action is fast and hard-hitting. It features an excellent lead performance, adds some ambiance and new life to the old action formula. It is a well-oiled film-making machine.
