When a Baby Runs the Show
The premise of Reborn! is equal parts absurd and endearing. An average, forgettable junior high student, Tsuna, is transformed when a baby in a suit (Reborn), claims to be an Italian Vongola family hitman who is now his personal coach to prepare for the future as the family’s top spot. Talk about a hook! Tsuna’s story is told in the classic fish out of water theme, but instead of being submersed in the water, he is placed in the deep end of the mafia training pool, run by Reborn himself, a pint sized professional. The series home in on Tsuna’s disbelief and fear creatively, to display a variety of gags, and offers comically dangerous scenarios, which display tsuna’s disbelief and fear. This series is the anime comedy embodiment of absurd humor. All the pieces come together and are nicely balanced to show the character moments and the ridiculousness of the plot. Among Reborn’s cast of characters, the series brings the high school mafia prep into reality.
The Hilarious Road to Being a Boss
What really stands out in the first season of "REBORN!" is its unique combination of comedy and character development. Tsuna is not simply a victim of Reborn's mercyless methods of training. He slowly begins to show courage and willingness. A lot of comedy comes from the juxtaposition of Tsuna's meekness and the anxiety-provoking and outrageous circumstances Reborn brings upon Tsuna. We watch him dodge bullets and learn to fight. We watch him learn to survive the school day. We watch him learn to survive with his new group, and we enjoy watching him react to the new and bizarre situation he is in. Tsuna's support crew creates a memorable and entertaining group of characters that will help change and develop Tsuna's new Vongola family. Chaos and loyalty is the definition of Tsuna's crew and these characters will help develop him into a new person and new leader. The beginning of major arcs in the story slows the pacing down, but the casts relationships grow with each passing episode, each new bond that is formed creates a strong foundation. With a short runtime of 25 minutes each, you will enjoy the comedy and the glimpses of what is to come.
More Than Just Laughs and Lessons
While comedy is the main draw, “REBORN!” is so much more with its adventure and action elements. With Tsuna (and comically, the rest of the world) slowly developing confidence and power, the series elevates the stakes, and fight scenes become more elaborate. The show eases the audience into a more drawn-out and serious view of the Vongola clan and rival families, taking the show from pure slapstick and comedy to depth in its storytelling and action. It’s pretty clever of the show writers and creators to keep their focus core of comedy and tricks but slowly elevate the show to a fantastic showcase of action adventure. Not really on the strength of its plot, but how well the show manages to string together some your-move type strategies with the width of the characters options to draw from and keep the scene fresh. The action doesn’t rely on strength like other action shows, but on trickery and teamwork, reflecting Tsuna’s growth, and the bonds he forms, as a character and a leader. The TV-14 rating is perfectly on point, as the action can look pretty brutal at times, but the show never strays into brutality. The characters’ strong bonds formed leave a huge drawing appeal to the show beyond its comedy.
Finding Your Place in the Family
The series REBORN! blends several genres to create something both hilarious and wild, yet also satisfying. While some folks might take some time to adjust to the unique blend in tonal and genre shifts, it's worth the watch. Stakes complement character growth, and the graphics for jumps to action are seamless. Visually, the graphics, which were created for a TV audience in 2006, might lack the intricate detail created for production today, but they still maintain vibrancy. The main character has a lot of growth outside of their regular journey, and overall, the plot is about the growth of characters and understanding the true meaning of a family—even when that family runs the mafia. The iconic syndicate boss is an adorable infant. For folks who appreciate long-format shows with developing action and a balance of heart and humor, REBORN! is something you can check out on CocoFlix. It really shows how, in creating a large/expansive fan-favorite story, incorporating a simple, outrageous premise can really pay off.
