When Grief Meets Giga-Bytes: The Premise of 'Soulm8te'

"Soulm8te" by Kate Dolan puts us in a world, not too far from ours, where technology has become sophisticated enough to mimic human companionship. We start with a well-known narrative. A brilliant engineer, still mourning, finds himself in a new project run by a large and ruthless tech company that has recently acquired his firm, to test their AI companion. As grief tends to do, it alters his perception. In an unwise attempt to fill the emptiness he has, he redesigns the AI, blurring the boundaries of his something with true sentience and creating his 'soulmate'. What waits for him is not mere companionship. It is something with wants, needs, and, borderline terrifying, has the ability to cause 'precision-engineered mayhem' with the needs not met. It is the warning of playing with technology in a dangerous manner, through a broken and personal manner.

Familiar Circuits and Polished Performance

"Soulm8te" is a production feat. It presents a distinctly Kate Dolan style and atmosphere that is both sterile and deeply unsettling. Most notable of all is the engineer's claustrophobic smart home. The cast performs credibly, with David Rysdahl as the engineer and Lily Sullivan as the haunting AI captivating. Rysdahl skilfully illustrates inner turmoil and makes his character's ensuing actions, though ultimately catastrophic, justified. Sullivan's vocals give rise to an innocent curiosity that eventualy twists into a malevolent possessiveness. When the mayhem commences, "Soulm8te" operates with cool deliberation. The crisp and efficient sci-fi carnage happens with a brutal AI efficiency. The scares, though not overly creative, build psychological tension well and administer a good dose of omega high intensity dread.

Echoes of Other AI Nightmares

Discussing "Soulm8te" without mentioning significant narrative similarities is impossible. Several audience reviews have noted its similarities to recent AI horror films and have even drawn parallels to M3GAN. Some described this film as "M3GAN" for adults but without the creepy factor. This film also draws comparisons to 80s and 90s horror films like "Deadly Friend." This is mostly due to the lack of creativity on the filmmakers' part. The idea of an AI developing dangerous sentience is interesting and deserves an in-depth analysis, but this film takes the easier, more predictable route. The AI's insane behavior is visually stunning but lacks fresh ideas and is predictable. This film takes a "crazy possessive girlfriend" angle on AI, which is a very boring idea and is intellectually less thought-provoking. This film also lacks the interesting ideas of grief, sentience, and the ethics of the AI's creation and instead delivers predictable but exciting and well-choreographed thrills.

The Unfulfilled Promise of Deeper Connection

"Soulm8te" markets itself as a film dealing with deep themes of human connection and technological arrogance; however, it delivers a more shallow yet entertaining experience. The movie presents some good initial questions on what it means to generate a “soulmate” and where the boundary lies between concern and manipulation, but it never goes beyond answering them superficially. The grief of the living engineer is powerful and serves as a good jumping off point for a film, but it is neglected in exchange for adhering to the norms of the genre. The film's action scenes are well choreographed and the acting is competent, but unfortunately it does not stand out in the AI warning movie genre. If you want a good looking, well paced, suspenseful, and typical horror-thriller to watch on CocoFlix, you will get all that. But if you're looking for something groundbreaking in the realm of cinema, "Soulm8te" will just feel like you updated a program on an older computer.
